Horizon 2020 is the biggest EU Research and Innovation programme ever with nearly €80 billion of funding available over 7 years (2014 to 2020) – in addition to the private investment that this money will attract. It promises more breakthroughs, discoveries and world-firsts by taking great ideas from the lab to the market. Horizon 2020 sections are:
1. Excellent Science
2. Societal Challenges
3. Industrial Leadership
4. Science with and for Society
5. Spreading Excellence and Widening Participation
6. Enhanced European Innovation Council (EIC) pilot
7. Focus areas
8. European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT)
9. Euratom

Within the Excellent Science pillar, one type of bottom-up actions are Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) that provide grants (over €6 billion from 2014 to 2020) for all stages of a researcher’s career. One of the most attractive types of MSCA grants are Individual Fellowships (IFs) available to experienced researchers from all over the world and for research in any area.
